Universities need a systematic way of ensuring all researchers are trained in conducting and reporting research, journal publication, and publishing ethics, said Edanz Group senior representatives at the second annual conference of the Research Managers and Administrators Network - Japan (RMANJ) in Fukui, Japan, on 1 September 2016.
Addressing the 50 university research administrators attending a special Edanz seminar at the RMANJ conference, Mr Koji Yamashita (Edanz CEO) first introduced the rapidly changing landscape in science, technical, and medical (STM) publishing both internationally and nationally.
Research institutions need to catch up with the trends and technology, while staying competitive in their research output and research dissemination strategies, he said. Academic activities include not only publishing research but also increasingly making data and protocols publicly available, as well as proving community impact of research.
Dr Trevor Lane (Edanz Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant) added that researchers now need to show they know about copyright and "copyleft", know about intellectual property and possibly patent their inventions, know how to effectively peer review papers, be on journal editorial boards and become senior editors and editors in chief, communicate science to the public and media, and also mentor the next generation of researchers.
University research administrators are therefore under pressure to themselves know about many new trends in research and publishing, and need to design continuous training programs for their staff and students. In addition to promoting good ethics in research, universities have the responsibility to teach about being ethical with data handling, storage, and access; what can be shared in data and article repositories and networking sites; ethical journal submission and peer review; and how and when to communicate findings to the media.
At the same time, universities have to warn their researchers of online scams, such as unethical/predatory journals, publishers, and conferences.
Attendees were told international initiatives are under way to help protect researchers and the scientific literature, such as websites of the Committee on Publication Ethics and Think, Check, Submit. They were also reminded that they can book educational seminars from trusted vendors, and there are free educational resources in the Edanz website and in the Edanz e-learning platform Author Academy.
