Edanz Group was invited to give expert publishing advice to Japanese zoology researchers on 19 September 2015 at the annual conference of the Zoological Society of Japan, held in the Toki Messe convention center in Niigata City, Japan.
At the lunchtime seminar, Dr Trevor Lane (Education Director and Senior Publishing Consultant of Edanz Group) presented tips on publishing in international academic journals. He also dispelled myths about academic research reporting and highlighted common language errors in manuscripts, offering suggestions on how to improve them.
Using examples taken from indexed peer-reviewed zoology journals, he illustrated features of good research reporting and how to minimize the chances of journal rejection.
The feedback obtained from the 40 conference delegates revealed that they appreciated the practical hints on understanding journals' aims and scope, and choosing appropriate journals using the free Edanz Journal Selector tool. They were also grateful for the systematic instructions on improving manuscript readability to increase the effectiveness of communication with a journal's readership. All participants found the seminar satisfactory or very satisfactory.
"The presentation changed my misconception that scientific papers should have long sentences with difficult words; it was very useful," wrote one seminar attendee.
